What do black rhinos actually eat?

Leaves, branches and woody browse in savanna, scrub and dry woodland of eastern and southern Africa. “Herbivore — leaves, branches, and woody browse” without the hooked-lip split was the thin version of this page.

How do they find food?

Smell and a prehensile upper lip, not keen eyesight. They pick shrubs whites cannot crop. Calves follow the cow through thicket, not across a grazing lawn.

What do they do to the thicket?

Browsing shapes woody plants. Empty scrub cannot hold a Critically Endangered browser. Diet conservation is habitat plus anti-poaching — numbers are increasing from a remnant, still CR.

Does feeding start conflict?

Yes. Never feed wild black rhinos. Habituation raises injury risk. They are not suburban pets. Horn demand, not a missing salad, crashed the species.

Why the hooked lip?

It is a picking tool for thorny browse. The head stays higher than a white rhino’s. Mixing the lips mixes the genus.

Does solitary life change the menu?

Adults overlap little. Each home range still needs woody browse. WARN’s rhino appeal funds partner-led anti-poaching — not a rhino camp.

Black Rhinoceros FAQs

What do black rhinoceroses eat?

Woody browse. Black rhinos (Diceros bicornis) are hooked-lip browsers of leaves, twigs and shrubs — not square-lipped white-rhino grazers of short grass. They strip acacia and succulents that whites cannot crop. They are herbivores, not predators. Never feed wild rhinos. Figures checked 13 August 2026.

Do black rhinos eat the same things as white rhinos?

No. The names are not about colour. Black rhinos browse; white rhinos graze. That split is why they can share a reserve without eating the same plants. A zoo pellet is not a wild diet sheet for either, and it is useless for Asian forest rhinos.

Does horn have anything to do with diet?

No. Horn is compacted keratin with no proven medicinal value. Poaching for horn crashed numbers about 96% between 1970 and the 1990s. IUCN still lists them Critically Endangered (2020 assessment: increasing, still CR). Diet conservation is browse plus anti-poaching.

What actually helps them keep eating in the wild?

Keep scrub standing and keep poachers out. World Animal Rescue Network’s rhino appeal funds partner-led protection. WARN does not run rhino camps.
