Quick answer
White rhinos (Ceratotherium simum) are square-lipped grazers of short grass — not hooked-lip black-rhino browsers. They crop swards with the head held low. Never feed wild rhinos. Figures checked 13 August 2026.
What do white rhinos actually eat?
Short grasses on open savanna and woodland in southern and eastern Africa. Occasional browse fills gaps; it does not make them black rhinos. “Herbivore — short grasses” without the square-lip split was the thin version of this page.
How do they find food?
Smell and a wide muzzle, not keen eyesight. They spend much of the day cropping. Calves follow the cow; they are not taught to browse like a hooked-lip species.
What do they do to the grassland?
Heavy grazing keeps swards short and moves nutrients. Empty grass cannot hold a Near Threatened grazer. Diet conservation is habitat plus anti-poaching — southern whites recovered, then poaching pressure returned.
Does feeding start conflict?
Yes. Never feed wild white rhinos. Habituation raises injury risk and can lead to lethal management. They are not suburban pets. Horn demand, not a missing salad, is the historic driver of deaths.
Why the square lip?
It is a cropping tool. The head stays low. Black rhinos hold the head higher to strip shrubs. Mixing the lips mixes the genus.

White Rhinoceros FAQs
What do white rhinoceroses eat?
Short grass. White rhinos (Ceratotherium simum) are square-lipped grazers, not hooked-lip black-rhino browsers. They crop lawn-height swards with the head held low and may take a little browse in lean months. They are herbivores, not predators. Never feed wild rhinos. Figures checked 13 August 2026.
Do white rhinos eat the same things as black rhinos?
No. The names are not about colour. White rhinos graze short grass; black rhinos (Diceros bicornis) browse leaves and twigs. That split is why they can share a reserve without eating the same plants. A zoo pellet is not a wild diet sheet for either.
Does horn have anything to do with diet?
No. Horn is compacted keratin — hair and fingernail protein — with no proven medicinal value. Poaching for horn is why southern whites recovered and then came back under pressure, and why northern whites are functionally extinct. Diet conservation is grass plus anti-poaching.
What actually helps them keep eating in the wild?
Keep short-grass savanna standing and keep poachers out. World Animal Rescue Network’s rhino appeal funds partner-led protection. WARN does not run rhino camps.
Who this page is for. This page is about wild diet. Skip it if you need a captive feeding plan from a veterinarian.

Do groups change the menu?
Cows and subadults may form loose groups on the same sward. They still graze grass. WARN’s rhino appeal funds partner-led anti-poaching — not a rhino camp.
