How Fast Is A Leopard?

Quick answer

Short bursts are commonly cited around 58 km/h (36 mph). That is a repeated estimate, not a radar census. Leopards are ambush hunters, not cheetahs. Do not try to outrun one. The species is IUCN Vulnerable. Figures checked 13 August 2026.

How fast is a leopard, really?

Treat ~58 km/h as a planning figure for a short closing sprint. Body size (roughly 30–90 kg), terrain and motivation all change what you would measure. Amur leopards in temperate forest and African leopards in open savanna are not a matched race.

Is that a distance pace?

No. Ambush, a burst, then a climb with the kill if lions or hyenas are near. Open ground favours a higher recorded number; thick cover favours stealth. They are not endurance runners.

Why isn’t the body a cheetah’s?

Stockier build, climbing muscle, a skull built to hold struggling prey. Cheetahs trade that for a flexible sprint spine. Mixing the anatomies produces a false km/h war.

How should you read viral km/h claims?

Prefer ranges from field estimates over a single filmed “record.” Never try to outrun wildlife. A drone split is not a subspecies census.

Does speed change the listing?

No. The species is Vulnerable; Amur, Arabian and Indochinese subspecies are Critically Endangered. Snares do not care how fast a cat can close on an impala.

Does adaptability make them faster?

It lets them hunt in more habitats. It does not add km/h. WARN’s habitat appeal funds partner work — not a tiger appeal.

Leopard FAQs

How fast is a leopard?

Short bursts are commonly cited around 58 km/h (36 mph). That is a repeated field estimate, not a radar census of every subspecies. They are ambush hunters, not cheetahs. A human cannot outrun a charge in cover, which is why vehicle and hide rules exist — not because leopards hunt people as a default.

Can a leopard outrun a human?

Over a short burst, yes. Do not test it. Do not run: running can trigger chase. Get into a vehicle or a building if you have one. Speed trivia is not a reason to bait a cat for video.

Are leopards faster than cheetahs?

No. Cheetahs are the sprint specialists. Leopards win on climbing, cacheing and a broader diet. Mixing the two produces a false race. Snow leopards are a third species on cliffs, not a fourth racetrack.

What actually helps leopards more than speed facts?

Prey, cover, and less conflict. World Animal Rescue Network funds habitat-protection partners — not a tiger appeal. WARN does not run leopard camps.
