Do they live in ordinary lakes?
The historic home was the lake complex under what is now Mexico City. Most of that water is gone. Remaining occupancy is canal and chinampa water with cover and prey. A garden pond in another country is not Xochimilco. Do not release captives.
Have they lost range?
Yes. Drainage, pollution and invasive fish punched the map down to fragments. “Freshwater lakes and canals of Mexico City” without that collapse was the thin version of this page. A pink pet in Europe does not reopen Lake Texcoco or restock Xochimilco.
