How long do vaquitas live in the wild?
About 20 years is the planning figure for animals that are not drowned first. The 2025 study-area sighting range is a count of survivors, not an age table. “Around Around 20 years” was the broken template line.
What shortens vaquita lives?
Totoaba gillnets, first. Roadkill copy and suburban conflict do not belong on a porpoise. There is no evidence the old ~45% per year crash is still running inside the recent study area — and no excuse to put the nets back.
What helps vaquitas live longer?
Empty nets in the last range. Captive veterinary care is not available: the 2017 attempt failed. Never bait or chase a wild vaquita. A 20-year label needs water without gear.
How do life stages change the risk?
Calves still appear in recent surveys, which is the only good news in the age structure. Each drowned adult is a multi-year hole in a species counted on one hand. Juveniles and adults share the same nets.
Does Critically Endangered status already end the average?
It truncates it. A handful of animals can still breed; they cannot absorb another crash. Body condition in the study area has not read as a dying remnant — the listing is the gear.

Why do so few reach old age?

Did captivity extend their lives?
No. VaquitaCPR in 2017 could not keep animals alive in human care and was stopped. A named aquarium porpoise of another species is not a vaquita lifespan. Wild years depend on empty nets, not tanks. There is no zoo birthday to sell as a gulf census.
