US butterflies: identification guide

Garden favourites from monarchs and swallowtails to cabbage whites and red admirals.

Large orange wings with thick black veins point to a monarch. Big yellow butterflies with black stripes and tails are tiger swallowtails. Small whites on brassicas are usually cabbage whites; orange-brown migrants with eyespots underneath are often painted ladies.

How to identify common US garden butterflies

  1. 1

Note overall colour. Orange-and-black often means monarch or viceroy; yellow sulphurs; white cabbage whites; blue blues.

  2. 2

Watch the flight. Monarchs glide powerfully; skippers dart and hold wings partly closed; swallowtails float with deep wingbeats.

  3. 3

Check for tails and eyespots. Swallowtails have hindwing tails; buckeyes have bold eyespots; painted ladies lack monarch’s thick black veins.

  4. 4

Link to host plants. Monarch caterpillars need milkweed; black swallowtails use parsley-family herbs; cabbage whites use brassicas.

  5. 5

Photograph both surfaces. Upperwing and underwing patterns often differ — a phone photo of both sides helps confirm ID.

Compare with British butterflies.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell a monarch from a viceroy?

Viceroys are usually smaller and show a black horizontal line across the hindwing that monarchs lack. Monarchs also have a more gliding flight.

What plants attract the most butterflies?

Native nectar plants plus host plants for caterpillars — milkweed for monarchs, dill/parsley for black swallowtails, and native asters and goldenrods for many species.

Are butterfly releases good for conservation?

Commercial mass releases can spread disease and confuse migration studies. Better to plant habitat and support local wild populations.

When is butterfly season in the US?

It varies by region — roughly spring through autumn in temperate states, with year-round activity in the far south. Peak diversity is often midsummer.
