Best Hypoallergenic Cat Breeds: Do They Really Exist? (Vet-Reviewed)
Vet-reviewed by Veterinary Reviewer, DVM · Last reviewed June 2026
Why are people allergic to cats?
The main culprit is Fel d 1, a protein produced in a cat’s saliva, skin, and sebaceous glands. When a cat grooms, the protein coats the fur and dries into lightweight dander that becomes airborne. Because the allergen comes from skin and saliva rather than hair length, even hairless cats can trigger reactions.
Which cat breeds are considered more hypoallergenic?
These breeds are commonly recommended for allergy sufferers because they produce less Fel d 1 or shed and spread less of it:
- Siberian — produces comparatively low Fel d 1 in many cats, despite a thick coat.
- Balinese — a long-haired Siamese relative often described as lower-allergen.
- Russian Blue — dense coat that may trap dander; frequently reported as lower-allergen.
- Cornish Rex & Devon Rex — short, fine coats that shed very little.
- Sphynx — hairless, so dander does not collect in fur, but the skin still produces Fel d 1 and these cats need regular bathing.
- Oriental Shorthair, Javanese, Bengal — short, easy-care coats often tolerated better by sensitive owners.
Allergen output varies cat to cat. Females and neutered males generally produce less Fel d 1 than intact males.
How can I reduce cat allergy symptoms?
Spend time with an individual cat before adopting to test your reaction. Then:
- Use HEPA air purifiers in the rooms where the cat spends most time.
- Vacuum and wash bedding frequently.
- Keep the cat out of the bedroom.
- Wash your hands after contact.
- Brush or wipe the cat regularly — ideally done by someone without allergies.
- Ask your vet about Fel d 1–reducing cat foods, which are now available from some manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Sphynx hypoallergenic?
Not fully. Being hairless reduces dander buildup in fur, but the skin still produces Fel d 1. Frequent bathing helps reduce exposure.
Do hypoallergenic cats shed?
Most shed at least a little. 'Lower-allergen' refers to protein levels, not zero shedding.
Can I build immunity to my cat over time?
Some people's symptoms ease over time, but it is not reliable. Manage the environment and consult an allergist.
