How to Care for a Betta Fish

Vet-reviewed via PetHealth+ · Last reviewed June 2026

Bettas need a heated, filtered tank of at least 19 litres (5 gallons) — not a bowl. Stable warm water and regular partial water changes prevent disease.

Tank size

Larger is easier to maintain stable water quality.

Heating

78–80°F (25–27°C) consistently.

Plants and enrichment

Live or silk plants provide hiding places.
