What is Benadryl and what does it treat in dogs?
Benadryl is the brand name for diphenhydramine, a first-generation antihistamine that blocks histamine — the chemical behind itching, swelling, and sneezing during an allergic reaction. Vets commonly suggest it for mild allergic itching, hives, insect-bite or bee-sting reactions, and mild motion sickness.
It is not a strong treatment — it meaningfully helps only a minority of allergy dogs — so persistent skin allergies usually need a vet-prescribed option instead.
How much Benadryl can I give my dog?
The Merck Veterinary Manual lists 2–4 mg per kg (about 0.9–1.8 mg per pound). A simple, widely used practical dose is 1 mg per pound, 2–3 times daily.

Which Benadryl products are unsafe for dogs?
Give only plain diphenhydramine. Avoid:
- “Allergy & Sinus” / “-D” formulas — these contain decongestants like pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine, which are toxic to dogs.
- Combination products with acetaminophen (Tylenol) — toxic.
- Liquid or children’s formulas containing xylitol or alcohol — xylitol is highly toxic to dogs. Read the inactive-ingredient list.
When should dogs not take Benadryl?
Talk to your vet first if your dog has glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, seizures, an enlarged prostate, or is pregnant or nursing. Benadryl can interact with other drugs.
Side effects and overdose signs
Most dogs get mild drowsiness; some become unusually hyperactive. Signs of overdose include agitation, rapid heart rate, dilated pupils, tremors, seizures, or trouble walking. If you suspect an overdose, call your vet, an emergency clinic, or a pet poison helpline right away.
